Put ‘em together and what have you got? Our engagement story!
Having been together for over 5 years it was “about bloody time” (as some of our friends and family have been known to put it). I guess the engagement story starts with a trip to Livingston and a shopping spree in November 2013. Having perused the Livingston Designer Outlet we decided to visit the shopping centre next door. Upon entering there was a European market laid out in the middle of the centre selling all kinds of weird and wonderful foods, which looked and smelled amazing! I was so caught up in this that I was startled when Paul suddenly burst out laughing and said, “I take that’s where I’m buying it then…” I had no clue as to what he was on about. Being the 5’3” petite wee soul that I am I was unable to see the sign over the market advertising “Barclay’s Diamonds.” When it came into view I too started laughing and at that moment we both knew that should we ever get engaged there could be no other place to buy my engagement ring. (I should take this time to note that Paul’s last name – and soon to be mine – is Barclay…yeah, probably should have opened with that).
Fast forward a couple of weeks to the beginning of December and Paul, my friend Sarah and I are in the car once again heading in the Edinburgh direction. The reason for this trip is that Sarah and I were running the Challenge Scotland 5K. I was pretty nervous having never entered a race before but was excited to see how I would get on. My dad also travelled through to support us. Little did I know that Paul was going to use the situation to his advantage. While Sarah and I were out pounding the pavements and getting progressively redder in the face Paul took the rare opportunity of being alone with my dad to ask him for his blessing to marry me. I must say the two of them did very well at keeping straight faces when I came back in. Although I was too busy catching my breath to really notice much.
Christmas morning, one of my favourite days of the year had arrived! Having laid out the presents oh so nicely the night before, Paul and I went through to the living room to start the unwrapping process. The last gift I opened was a digital photo frame. I had never owned one before and was looking forward to putting photos on it. Paul had already taken the time to do this so I was able to turn it on and flick through straight away. The first photo that came up was the one photo of the night we met. I hadn’t seen it in a while and it made me think just how far we’d came since then. The photos then went on to include those with my friends and family and various trips Paul and I have taken together including London and New York. While I was reminiscing Paul began to rummage around underneath the sofa I was sitting on and appeared to get more anxious as time went on as he couldn’t find whatever he seemed to be looking for. After about 30 seconds he pulled out a little brown leather box with a gold B embellished on it. And then…
…on Christmas morning 2014, sitting in my pj’s in our first little flat, Paul asked me to marry him and to spend the rest of my life with him. I can honestly say I’ve never been happier.
So tell me your engagement story below, I love a bit of romance and soppiness so I do :D
